The physical demands of dancing make your feet and ankles susceptible to injury just as in any other sport. The combination of beginning dance at a young age and the repetitive movements that require great flexibility and strength increase the chances for overuse injuries.

What type of dance injuries can occur?

The majority of injuries in dance are overuse related as opposed to trauma. Your injuries would be more common in the feet, ankle and lower legs but can also affect the low back and hips. Some of the most common injuries you may experience would be stress fractures, tendon injuries, ankle sprains and strains. These injuries are more frequent as dancers age making it extremely important to emphasize prevention at a younger age.

What would cause a dancer to become injured?

Some of the common causes for dance injuries include: type of dance, frequency of classes, rehearsals and performances, duration of training, hard floors, cold studios, shoes, biomechanics, history and nutritional deficiencies.

Can I prevent these injuries?

Dancers should remember to wear properly fitting clothing and shoes, stay hydrated, avoid dancing through pain, maintain correct technique, keep your bodies limits in mind and go through an adequate warm-up and cool down.
