Laser Therapy for Toenail Fungus

Fight Back against stubborn toenail fungus!

With summer quickly approaching, we can help clear toenail fungus and get your feet sandal-ready. Our new FOX laser is proven to be a safe and effective solution for treating toenail fungus. Fungal toenails are thickened, discoloured and unsightly nails that may be malodorous and be very embarrassing. Fungal toenail infections affect 3 – 5% of the population. However, since many toenail fungus cases are left untreated, the percentages are likely to be higher. You may suffer from nail fungus if you have one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Thickened nail
  • Brittle, crumbly or ragged nail
  • Distorted in shape or separated
  • Dull, with no luster or shine
  • A dark colour, caused by debris building up under the nail

How does the FOX laser fight toenail fungus?

The FOX laser kills the fungus that lives in and under the toenail by damaging it the cell membrane and changing the enzyme content. This slows the fungi metabolism so its unable to digest the keratin in our nails. FOX laser also increases the body’s immune response to isolate and attack the fungi.  The FOX laser passes through the toenail without causing damage to the nail or the surrounding skin. Toenail fungus is very stubborn to clear and even with the FOX laser it will take time to see full clearing.

How is the laser different from other common treatment methods for onychomycosis?

Until recently, sufferers of onychomycosis had few options for successfully treating this embarrassing condition. Oral medications come with significant side effects and require regular monitoring. Topical treatments are a safer option with minimal success on its own (e.g. Penlac, Jublia), the treatments could take months or even longer with limited success. However, topical combined with the FOX laser is very effective.

Is FOX laser treatment safe?

FOX laser treatment is very safe. No side effects or adverse reactions have been reported. You will be pre-screened to ensure you are a good candidate for laser treatment before starting any treatments.

Is FOX laser treatment painful?

Most people feel no pain. Some patients complain of discomfort from warming of the nail during treatment.

What can I expect immediately following the procedure? When will I see results?

Immediately following the procedure your nail may feel warm for a few minutes. Over the coming weeks and months, your nail should begin to grow out clear of any fungus and you will begin to see new, healthier toenail growing back. Toenail fungus often slows the growth of your nail, so clearing times can vary from 6 months to a year. On average, most patients will start to see results within the first 3 to 4 months.

How many treatments are recommended?

The number of laser treatments will vary depending on how severely each digit is infected. The general treatment protocol we use in the clinic is 3 laser treatments performed at 3 week intervals. So, in 6 weeks, your laser treatment should be completed.

How soon can I return to normal activities?

You can resume normal activities immediately after their treatment.

Will toenail fungus come back?

Recurrence of toenail fungus can be a common problem with any treatment. It’s important that you practice good foot hygiene such as regular moisturizing, wearing clean socks, cleaning your shoes and even painting the toenails with Tea Tree Oil twice a week to help reduced the chances of toenail fungus returning.

Can I put on nail polish or have a pedicure?

You can apply polish immediately after the treatment. It is important to remove all nail polish and nail decorations the day before your treatment. We generally do not recommend leaving polish on the toenails for long periods of time. If you do choose to apply nail polish, we recommend using Dr’s Remedy nail polish, which is enriched with Tea Tree Oil and is free of additives like formaldehyde and toluene. It’s best to avoid pedicures while being treated for toenail fungus.

Is there a recovery period?

No. You walk in and walk out immediately after your treatment.
