Toenail Fungus

toenail fungus, laser therapy, nail fungus, fungus, athletes foot, jublia Nail Fungus infections occur when microscopic fungi gain entry through a small trauma in your nail, then grow and spread in the warm, moist environment found inside your socks and shoes. You may have toenail fungus if presents with swelling, yellowing, thickening or crumbling of the nail, streaks or spots down the side of the nail, and sometimes complete loss of the nail. Toenail colour can vary from brown or yellow to white.

Common reasons why you developed toenail fungus

You may have picked up toenail fungus if the feet were exposed to damp areas such as public gyms, shower stalls or swimming pools, and even from other family members (when sharing nail clippers). If you are active (lots of perspiration) and wear shoes that don’t have much breathability and socks that don’t help to keep the feet dry, then you’re generally at a higher risk of developing toenail fungus.

Other risk factors include not drying the feet thoroughly after showering, excessive perspiration and a weakened immune system. It you have diabetes or are on medication that lowers your immune response, fungal infections can be an unfortunate problem or side effect. In these cases, you should see a Chiropodist or Podiatrist to help trim and treat the infection.

Things you can do to help treat or prevent toenail fungus

Make sure that you maintain really good foot hygiene habits such as drying feet after showers, avoid wearing harmful nail polishes and visiting spas for pedicures, routinely wear clean socks, control excessive perspiration and wear clean, dry shoes. Various over-the-counter remedies are available including tea tree oil, Vick’s vapor rub, olive oil, etc. If you fail to see any improvement by making these lifestyle changes, consult with our Chiropodist to find the best way to treat your infection.
