What Are Custom Orthotics?
Custom orthotics are prescription medical devices made from a three-dimensional cast, mould or digital scan of your feet. Over-the-counter insoles are mass-produced in standard sizes. Custom orthotics are designed around your foot structure, gait pattern and diagnosis, so they help correct biomechanical problems instead of only cushioning them.

Precision Laser Scanning that Replicates Plaster of Paris Casting
Veriscan Podiatric Scanner (VPS) utilizes red line-laser 3D-imaging to quickly and accurately captures a true-dimension digital cast of the human foot. In tandem with Envisic's software, the VeriScan can complete and process a scan in seven seconds and send it along to the lab in another five seconds.

The Gold Standard in Precision Foot Orthotic Casting
Plaster of Paris casting is the gold standard for capturing a true 3D, non-weight-bearing mold of your foot. By holding your foot in its ideal neutral position while the quick-setting plaster sets. This traditional method precisely captures every contour and arch profile. The result is a highly accurate representation of your foot’s structural alignment, creating the foundation for custom orthotics that deliver optimal support and corrective balance.
Cost and Insurance Coverage
Custom orthotics at Mount Joy Foot Clinic are $575 per pair. This includes casting (3D laser scan or plaster of Paris), one pair of custom orthotics and your dispensing appointment. Many extended health plans cover part or all of the cost, often when the claim includes a prescription, a documented biomechanical assessment and proof of casting. OHIP does not cover custom orthotics. We recommend checking your plan’s requirements before your appointment.
Frequently Asked Questions About Custom Orthotics
If your pain is mild and general, over-the-counter insoles may help. If you have a structural foot problem, diabetes, poor circulation, or pain that hasn’t improved with proper footwear and store-bought insoles, we recommend a chiropodist assessment for custom orthotics.
Some insurance plans require a physician’s referral. Check with your provider before booking.

Most custom orthotics last 2–5 years, depending on your activity level, the materials and how often you wear them.
