When Foot Pain Is Keeping You Off the Field

Foot and ankle injuries are among the most common complaints in active populations, and they are also among the most undertreated. Rest helps short-term, but it rarely addresses why the injury happened or prevents it from recurring. A sprained ankle that isn't properly assessed often leads to chronic instability. Plantar fasciitis that's managed with ice and stretching alone tends to return the moment training resumes.

For young athletes, the stakes are higher. Growth-related conditions like Sever's disease are frequently dismissed as growing pains, leaving kids to push through pain that a few targeted interventions could resolve quickly.

Most foot and ankle problems in athletes have a mechanical component that responds well to the right clinical care. The question is whether that care happens before the problem becomes chronic.

Foot and Ankle Care Designed for Active People

Chiropodists are foot and ankle specialists, and the scope of care we provide goes well beyond toenail problems. For athletes and active patients, that includes diagnosing and treating heel pain, plantar fasciitis, and Achilles tendinopathy, assessing ankle sprains and managing post-injury recovery, addressing biomechanical contributors to overuse injuries through custom orthotics and gait analysis, and treating Sever's disease and other growth-related foot conditions in young athletes.

Our focus is the foot and ankle. For broader musculoskeletal concerns, we work alongside other healthcare providers and refer out where appropriate.

How We Help Athletes at Mount Joy Foot Clinic

Vithusha Yogeswaran, D.Ch is a registered chiropodist with a B.Med.Sci in Physiology with Distinction from Western University and a Diploma in Chiropody from the Michener Institute at UHN. Her clinical training spanned sports medicine, biomechanics, pediatrics, and dermatology placements, making her a strong fit for athletic and youth patients.

At Mount Joy, Vithusha works alongside Suleman Bhatti, D.Ch, who has 17 years of experience in biomechanics and custom orthotics, and the broader clinic team. Together they offer Swiss Dolor Clast shockwave therapy for plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinopathy, custom foot orthotics for load redistribution and overuse injury prevention, and foot and ankle mobilization for restricted joint movement post-injury.

Assessment

Your chiropodist will take a history of the injury or complaint, assess your gait, foot mechanics, and range of motion, and identify contributing factors. For younger patients, developmental context is included in the assessment.

Treatment

Treatment is matched to the findings. Shockwave therapy, mobilization, taping, orthotic prescription, and footwear advice may all be part of the plan. Most treatment sessions are 30 to 45 minutes.

Return to Activity

Your chiropodist will give you a realistic timeline for return to sport and any activity modifications to protect recovery. Follow-up visits track progress and adjust the approach as needed.

What Active Patients Come Back For

Athletes and active patients who address the mechanical cause of their injury, rather than just the symptoms, tend to stay healthier through their next season. A few things patients notice after treatment at Mount Joy:

Faster return to sport with a treatment plan that targets the root cause. Fewer recurrences, because biomechanical contributors like foot structure and load distribution have been addressed. Care that works for youth and adults, with Vithusha's sports medicine and pediatrics training meaning young athletes get age-appropriate assessment rather than a scaled-down adult approach.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Vithusha has specific clinical training in pediatric foot conditions, including Sever's disease, which is one of the most common causes of heel pain in children aged 8 to 14. Youth athletes are a regular part of the practice, especially during back-to-school and sports season.
Yes. Mount Joy uses the Swiss Dolor Clast radial shockwave system, which Suleman has used in practice for 15 years. It is a well-established treatment for plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinopathy and is widely used in sports medicine settings. Most patients return to light activity the same day.
In many cases, yes. Chiropodists specialize in the foot and ankle, so if the mechanical component of your injury has not been addressed, there may still be meaningful treatment options available. We are happy to work alongside your existing care team.
This depends on the nature and duration of the injury. Acute presentations often respond in two to four sessions. Chronic conditions with a longer history typically require more. Your chiropodist will give you a realistic expectation at your first visit.
Most extended health plans cover chiropody services. Coverage for specific treatments depends on your plan. We recommend confirming with your insurer before your appointment.
